How to Create Booklets Like an Expert Storyteller

Booklets are primarily a visual medium. Your choice of size, paper, and coating will enhance your story.

Select a size that serves the design and matches the intended use.

Your layout will depend on the booklet size. Factor in how large the images should appear, along with the space reserved for text.

  • The 5.5”x 8.5” size provides ample space for visual elements and blocks of text.
  • The standard 8.5” x 11” size is letter-sized and commonly associated with small magazines.

Complement the cover and inside pages with one another.

An impactful cover page will persuade your reader to experience each page of your booklet.

100 lb. Gloss Paper

  • Smooth paper that’s sturdier than magazine paper.
  • Gloss coating prints your design in vivid colors and adds an extra shine.

Booklets can be printed on extra thick 100 lb. paper, but other lighter weight options are also available:

70 lb. Paper Uncoated

  • A thin, lightweight paper stock that’s easy to carry around
  • Smooth writable surface

80 lb. Paper

  • A little thicker and sturdier than the 70 lb. paper
  • Shiny gloss or elegant matte coating on both sides

The saddle stitching method is recommended for booklets that are easy on the budget, but still make an impact.

How to Estimate the Best Number of Pages for Your Booklet

Booklets are composed of two-page types: cover pages and inside pages. The total number of pages includes both types. All booklets come with 4 cover pages, 2 for the front and 2 for the back. Each cover page has an outside cover and inside cover.

  • Long sheets of paper are folded in half and stapled in the middle to create your booklet.
  • Saddle stitched booklets are highly versatile, featuring a broad selection of paper and finishing options.
  • Saddle stitching offers a high-quality look and feel with budget-friendly customization.
  • Saddle stitching is great for projects 64 pages or less, giving the thinnest books a substantial feel.

Custom booklets are a resourceful way to provide essential details about your business in a compact format. Booklet printing is also an effective marketing medium if you’re looking to create a product catalog, instruction guide, training manuals or even a storybook. The stapled binding makes them sturdy enough to hand out at events or pack them with giveaways. Plus, you get to choose the stock and the number of pages that best suits your project. Check out our instructions below on how to set up your files for a booklet.

File Format & Layout Guidelines

For a successful print, we recommend following these upload specifications:

Format: Your file must be in PDF format, with no password protection.

Layout: Make sure that the file comes in single pages, arranged in correct reading order. Your upload must contain all pages, including four cover pages.

Blank pages: If you want the inside of the cover pages to be blank, make sure to include blank pages in your PDF file.

Design & Layout Tips for your Booklet

To ensure a polished, high-quality print check out these tips.

1. COLORS

Ink vs Toner – Ink (PMS or Pantone colors used in offset printing) will soak into uncoated papers.  Toner (from digital presses) always sits on top of the media.  Toner has its own luster (though not as glossy as a gloss page nor as glossy as UV or aqueous coating).  Toner is always a blend of CMYK and has a limited gamut. Keep in mind, when comparing a CMYK printed piece against your computer monitor, your monitor is RGB and will display the colors differently than the printed piece.

2. RESOLUTION

300dpi is the required resolution for booklets. Lower resolution files will affect the quality of the final print, and cause fuzzy or pixilated images or text.

3. BLEEDS

Include a bleed of 1/8” (0.125 in) on every side of every page to avoid white margins. The bleed threshold is ±0.25, anything beyond may keep the file from uploading.

4. MARGINS

Content should be placed at least 1/8” (0.125 in) from the trim line. Missing the correct safety margin, your text may be too close to the edge or binding. It can also end up in the bleed, causing it to get cut off.

Booklets have self-covers, meaning, the inside pages are printed on the same stock as the cover.  If you would like a card stock cover, please see our catalog section.

Frequently Asked Questions - Booklets

Q:  What is the fastest printing time available for booklets?
A:  Our typical turn time is 3-5 business days. Note this covers the production time of your booklet. It does not include shipping transit time or direct mail processing time. All turnaround times are based on business days and exclude national holidays. We do offer RUSH services on some quantities.  Ask for a custom quote if our typical turn time does not meet your needs.

Q:  What is included in the booklets’ four cover pages?
A:  The four cover pages include:

  1. Outside front cover or where your cover photo is located
  2. Inside front cover or the back of the cover page
  3. Inside back cover or the area behind the back cover
  4. Outside back cover or the last exterior page of your booklet

Q:  How much will I spend to print booklets?
A:  Booklet pricing depends on the quantity you order and the page count of your booklets. The higher your order quantity, the lower your price per piece. Note the total and individual price will depend on the cover and inside pages and the stock you choose.

Q: Do I have to include content on all four cover pages?
A: No, you’re not required to - you’ll just need to include blank pages in your print-ready
PDF. But if you’d like to utilize all the space and add content to all four cover pages, you’re welcome to do that, too.

Q: Do I need to keep page bleed in mind?
A: Yes.  Please include a bleed of 1/8" on every side of every page in your print file. This prevents white margins or images not reaching the edge of the page. If your file doesn’t include a page bleed, and is uploaded in the trim size, your document will not print
correctly.  On an 8.5”x11” booklet with bleed, your final file size will be 9”x11.5”.

Q: How many pages does a booklet have?
A: A booklet is composed of 4 cover pages and the inside pages. For instance, an 8-page booklet includes both sides of your front cover and both sides of your back cover. It also has 4 pages inside.  When setting up your files, make sure your number of pages is divisible by 4. Otherwise, you will end up with blank pages at the back of your booklet. For example:  Page counts should be 8,12,16, 20, 24, 28, 32, 36, etc.

Q: Can I get one booklet printed before I order for larger quantities?
A: Yes. We’re able to print a hard copy proof of your booklet so that you can check it out.  Hard copy proofs are $75 each and are printed on the same stock your order will be printed on.

Q: Will the price per booklet drop if I order more?
A: Yes. The price per booklet drops as your order quantity increases.
